Review of Raised in Ruins

Many of us have dreamed of escaping the stressful demands of our current life with the wish for a simpler one, surrounded by a breathtaking view. How far have you gotten? Me? Well, we did downsize three years ago. We moved into an almost tiny home (at 753 sq. ft.) on a little hill in rural America after bringing a 30 Yard dumpster to our backdoor, having a garage sale, and giving away the rest. And then just this year, we bought a very small camper to pull behind a larger car so we could have new adventures. All this was because Alzheimer’s forced us into a new reality. And it all pales in comparison to my friend and author Tara Neilson’s life.

Tara continues to live on the floathouse she built herself in Southeast Alaska after her family packed up and left their world in the Lower 48 behind, in 1980. Ironically to me, she lives in the same region my husband Jim went to live and work in Alaska the very same year. The same region I lived in and worked in, the fall of 1983. Tara has brought Southeast Alaska, the land that will forever hold a piece of our hearts, back to us in her beautiful memoir.

I introduced you to Tara in August, featuring her guest blog “How to Survive” (https://carlakirklandwriter.com/2019/08/24/how-to-survive/) with the promise of her memoir coming in 2020. 2020 is almost here, and her book will be released in April. I was fortunate enough to be asked by her publishing company, West Margin Press, to be an Advance Reader. Please go to my review of her book by either opening the Book Reviews tab in the main menu of this website or at https://carlakirklandwriter.com/book-reviews/.
